BiARS has always worked to be more than just an information centre and understand we are an important part of the community. Since we were formed, we have been a catalyst and / or had roles within many projects that have benefited our residents, visitors and businesses.
With our database of approximately 160 active volunteers we continue to assist our communities where we can. We had some exciting projects to benefit those around us happen in 2022 including the Queens Jubilee celebrations, events and initiatives that will ease social isolation and mental health within our area.
Below are some of the projects we have taken part in and some continue to do so.
BiARS has always been proactive in promoting, encouraging, assisting and organising new events within Burnham-on-Sea. We recognise that the events are not just something to bring in visitors, but an important part of living in our community. The events are integral to a lot of groups aim in being sustainable, whether that is to raise funds or to promote awareness of their group. Whenever BiARS organises events we always look to see how we can create benefit to the other organisations within our locality.
Some of the events we have organised or assisted in include, Jubilee celebrations, Craft Markets, World Record attempt, Pirate Day and many more.
Burnham and Highbridge Coronavirus Community Helpline was set up by Hel Brodie and Hel Groves at the start of the pandemic. Quickly it grew as was the need for support around our communities. BiARS stepped in early and offered assistance as it had the infrastructure already in place to manage such a project.
During the pandemic over 3500 requests for help were dealt with by the team with well over 100 local volunteers giving up there time to assist those in need.
The Helpline team was awarded a Somerset Medal for their work during the pandemic. The image on the left shows Nikki Gudka and June Pearce collecting the award on behalf of all involved.
BiARS now completely run the helpline which continues daily as we come out of the pandemic, due to the proven need for assistance, even in normal times by many of our residents.
The helpline runs Monday to Friday. If you need assistance call 01278 393231, leave a message and we will get back to you ASAP. Messages left before midday are generally dealt with the same day, calls after may be dealt with the following day.
In December 2020, BiARS was approached and asked if we could assist in the vaccination project at the Berrow Campus to assist the 6 local doctors surgeries in vaccinating all their clients. Within a couple of weeks, the fantastic community of volunteers rallied around and we had 65 volunteers who marshalled the outside operation of the campus, ensuring all who came for a vaccination were safe and sent in to the centre in a controlled manner. Over 26000 vaccinations was carried out at the centre before its move to Cheddar.
The team of volunteers did an amazing job and were awarded a Somerset Medal in recognition of their efforts. This project was successful only due to whole community pulling together and the BiARS team and volunteers are proud to have played a small part in this.
This project was supported all the way through by Burnham and Highbridge Town Council and we thank them for their support.
We have always tried to support the local groups and clubs within our community as we recognise the important part they play in bringing our community together.
